Latest Divorce Statistics Australia

Recently, the Australian Bureau of Statistics have released the most recent statics on divorce in Australia. Interestingly, the facts for 2022 are as follows:-

49,241 divorces were granted in 2022, compared to 56,244 in 2021.
For 2022, the average duration of marriage for which divorce was granted was 12.8 years.
The median age of the male divorcee is 46.7 years.
The median age of the female divorcee is 43.7 years.
In 2021, it was reported that 47.8% of divorces involved children but it is unclear as the how this figure has changed in the recent year.

Evidence shows that there has been a steady increase in divorce rates across the country in recent years up to 2021 (with the exception of the ACT). This is then followed by a sharp fall in numbers for 2022 in the most recent data. The Bureau has warned comparisons should not be made between the recent data and the previous year due to administrative changes in the Federal Circuit and Family Court.

Despite the reported fall in divorces, the number of marriages increased dramatically in 2022 with 127,161 marriages up from 89,167 in 2021.

This data can be traced back as far as 2002 and provides and an interesting look at the state of marriage and divorce within Australia.
