Family Law - Cutting the Orange

This is not my story but a famous story which also applies to resolving various types of family law conflicts or disputes. It goes something like the following:

Two sisters were fighting over to how to divide up an orange. After much dispute, they agreed to just cut it down the middle. The one sister scooped out the fruit, ate it, then chucked away the peel. The other sister scooped out the fruit, chucked it away and used the peel in baking a cake.

Neither sister took the time to look behind the position of the other to properly understand their respective interests. If they had, a better outcome could have been reached for both where one got to eat all of the fruit and the other got to use the entire peel in her cake.

A timely reminder for those involved in family law, property settlement, divorce, parenting conflict of family dispute resolution conferencing to really try to understand the other parties interests which then may assist in creating another (sometimes better) avenue of resolution so everyone can move on with their lives.
